The Event

For the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, the Merville Battery Museum presents every evening, from June 5 to 8, 2024 at 10 p.m., a large historical fresco “They didn’t know it was impossible… ».

Building on the successful experience in 2019, which had already brought together a large audience, the Merville battery and the 150 volunteers are renewing a scenographic, technical and human performance in 2024. Labelled “Normandy for Peace” by the Normandy Region, the show benefits from the support of the department and the Ministry of the Armed Forces. It is also in the top 15 of the D-day Festival Normandy, a program initiated by the region’s tourist offices.

A pedagogical approach, a mediation of history:

Every evening, in front of nearly 2000 spectators, on the very site of the assault, the historical fresco takes up each stage of the history of the battery: from its construction to the tragic epic of the assault. More than 100 historical re-enactors and volunteer extras pay tribute to the liberating paratroopers of Colonel Otway’s 9th Battalion.
